Crackbury, USA

Crackbury, USA is a documentary film covering the crack epidemic in Long Island during the 1980s. This film follows the story of two undercover cops and the lives of the people they arrested. The story unfolds through interviews and footage from 264 VHS tapes. It covers the beginning and height of the epidemic and also spotlights the lives that were lost or broken during this time.

The film was accepted into the 2022 Manchester Film Festival creating the need for a movie poster. After viewing the film I felt a conceptual approach was best for the film's tone.

I wanted to show that Long Island was riddled with drugs and the problem was deep within the soul in the area. Watching the footage it was clear avoidance was not possible for most people and I felt it was important to capture this root message. The documentary is not a "good guys versus bad guys" portrayal and a more abstract idea could better express the complexity of the issue. The background was created digitally to imitate VHS glitches and all typography treatments followed the same theme.
